J.E.I.D. Approach

J.E.I.D. ("Jade") is an easy way to remember what we are working towards in all things: Justice, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity in that order.

Diversity, without the added work of understanding how to be inclusive, only sets the stage for more harm; it becomes window dressing on an otherwise untidy house. In order to seek equity for any community, we must start with an authentic understanding of the reasons for and history of inequity toward that community. We cannot move forward without an understanding how we got there in the first place.

Only thinking in terms of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) misses a core component of authentic engagement with marginalized staff and community - an understanding of Justice.

Justice is the concept that all people should have equal access to opportunity and well-being in our world. Justice allows us the opportunity to approach all sides of inequity from societal, systemic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal with a greater understanding of the context which built the structures of discrimination and symmetry around us. This leads to a deeper understanding and a greater capacity to change. 

 

It is critical that we understand the past and how it has influenced the systems/narratives around us. That clear understanding allows us to step outside of cycles recreating systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice.

 

J.E.I.D. approaches to social justice and equitable engagement reverse the preconceived notion that adding in a diverse set of ideas and experiences is where to start on your journey. Instead, we must develop a 'Liberatory Consciousness' which include awareness, analysis, action, and accountability.
